'Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone' Fine Art Print
Black and white photography expresses light and contrast unlike color and in a place like Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, a place so full of vibrancy, needn’t color at all. In many ways the canyon’s characteristics are given so much more life in black and white. What a pleasure it is to imagine the colors that are.
Ferdinand Hayden led the first geological survey of Yellowstone in 1871. With him, he brought photographer, William Henry Jackson, and painter, Thomas Moran, to document the area we know today as Yellowstone. It is their very images that helped influence Congress to make Yellowstone the first National Park. Moran’s painting of the Canyon was purchased to celebrate.
Oh what it must have been like to be a painter then - to communicate a place through color because film photography was still in black and white.
